At 8 years and 9 months of age, Hugo, a Hungarian Vizsla, entered what should have been a calm and supported senior life stage. Instead, his owner, Wayne, was faced with a confronting diagnosis: Stage 4 Lymphoma.

Alongside this diagnosis, Hugo had a history of:

  • Immune system support needs
  • Folliculitis and Conjunctivitis
  • Minor eye ulceration

Like many ageing dogs, Hugo's case highlights a key truth in senior dog health: multiple systems are often involved, and care needs to be comprehensive, not isolated.

What Happens When a Dog is Diagnosed with Lymphoma?

Canine lymphoma is a complex cancer affecting the lymphatic system, often presenting as swollen lymph nodes, lethargy, and immune compromise. In senior dogs, the condition can progress rapidly if not supported appropriately.

In Hugo's case, the prognosis was immediate and severe.

"My previous vet told me Hugo only had 4–6 weeks to live."

Rather than pursuing chemotherapy, Wayne chose to explore a holistic, integrative approach, focusing on immune support, gut health, and overall vitality.

Which Natural Supplements Were Used to Support Hugo's Lymphoma and Overall Health?

Hugo's protocol combined targeted, practitioner-formulated supplements designed to support key systems involved in both lymphoma progression and senior dog resilience:

Core Products Used:

Pure Turkey Tail – rich in beta-glucans to support immune modulation

Mushroom Elixir – a blend of functional mushrooms for immune and cellular support

Organic Beef Spleen – a natural source of nutrients that support blood and immune health

Gut Restore – supports microbiome balance and digestive repair

Gut Protect – helps soothe and protect the gastrointestinal lining

Antinol Plus (initially used) – supports joint health and inflammation pathways

This combination reflects a systems-based approach, addressing:

  • Immune resilience
  • Gut integrity (a key regulator of immune function)
  • Inflammation pathways
  • Nutritional status in a senior dog

Can Natural Support Improve Quality of Life in Dogs with Lymphoma?

The results observed in Hugo's case were significant, particularly given the initial prognosis. Wayne commented about his condition update:

"The tennis ball size lymph gland on Hugo's right shoulder has now completely disappeared. A couple of other lymph glands have slightly reduced in size."

Beyond physical changes, Wayne also reported a meaningful improvement in Hugo's overall wellbeing:

"I know that this amazing combination has not only reduced/eliminated swollen lymph glands, but has extended Hugo's life and a quality and pain-free life at that. Hugo's happy, energetic and always ready to eat."

This is a critical consideration in senior dog health and lymphoma care — not just lifespan, but quality of life.

Why Gut Health and Immune Support Matter in Canine Lymphoma

Emerging research continues to reinforce the connection between the gut microbiome and immune regulation.

In dogs with lymphoma:

  • Immune dysregulation is a core feature
  • Gut integrity directly influences inflammatory signalling
  • Nutrient absorption becomes increasingly important

By incorporating Gut Restore and Gut Protect, Hugo's protocol supported:

  • A more balanced microbiome
  • Reduced gastrointestinal irritation
  • Improved nutrient assimilation

This foundation allows the body to respond more effectively to additional immune-supportive inputs, such as medicinal mushrooms.

How Did a Holistic Approach Change Hugo's Outcome?

Wayne combined CanineCeuticals supplementation with guidance from a holistic veterinarian, creating a truly integrative care plan.

"I found and settled on CanineCeuticals based upon their knowledge, advice, assistance and follow-ups."

This approach reflects the core philosophy of CanineCeuticals:

  • Work with the body, not against it
  • Support foundational systems first
  • Combine science with traditional, natural therapeutics

What Does This Case Study Show About Supporting Senior Dogs with Lymphoma?

Hugo's story reinforces several important principles in managing lymphoma in senior dogs:

  • A multi-system approach is essential
  • Immune health cannot be separated from gut health
  • Natural, practitioner-formulated supplements can play a meaningful supportive role
  • Quality of life should remain the primary outcome measure

An Update on Hugo's Journey

Since this case study was first published, Hugo has sadly passed away after a courageous fight with Stage 4 Lymphoma. Wayne shared that after Hugo was initially given a prognosis of just 4–6 weeks without chemotherapy, he went on to enjoy a further six months of quality time. While his illness was ultimately progressive, the supportive protocol played a meaningful role in helping maintain his comfort and quality of life during that time.

We remain deeply grateful to Wayne for sharing Hugo's story, and allowing us to play a role in his care. We honour Hugo's strength, spirit, and the love that surrounded him throughout his journey.
